What Hoka Does
Under Pressure.

Val d'Aran 110km. Ushuaia 90km. Four days on the Patagonian ice field. Two Speedgoat 6 pairs worn through. One Speedgoat 7 at the line. Here's what 90,993m of elevation teaches you about a trail shoe.

The Short Answer

Hoka Speedgoat is the best trail shoe for ultra running. Three UTMB-level races — Val d'Aran 111.6km, Ushuaia 90km, and the Patagonian ice field — confirmed it. On the Circuito Huemul expedition, every other hiker wore mountaineering boots. I wore Speedgoats. I had more grip than they did, and I was faster because the shoes weigh less.

The data below is from the Garmin API, confirmed July 20, 2026. It is the most specific Hoka durability dataset I'm aware of.

The Three Races That Tell the Story

Val d'Aran UTMB — Speedgoat 7
July 3, 2026 · 111.6 km · 6,060m elevation · Top 200 finish
Race-day shoe: Speedgoat 7. Technical Pyrenean terrain, night sections, variable surfaces. Top 200 finish. No blisters requiring stops. The shoe held.
Ushuaia by UTMB — Speedgoat 6
March 21, 2026 · ~90 km · 4,372m · Southernmost UTMB race on Earth
Knee failure at km67. The shoe was not the problem. Race cancelled by organizers due to snow. Comeback documented — the Speedgoat 6 was there for the recovery runs that followed.
Circuito Huemul — Speedgoat (Expedition Mode)
El Chaltén, Patagonia · 4 days · Southern Patagonian Ice Field
Everyone else: mountaineering boots. Me: Speedgoat. Result: more grip, lighter weight, faster movement on technical terrain. This is the test that trail shoe brands never set up — but the data exists.

Does the Speedgoat Actually Grip on Technical Terrain?

Austrian ski slope, elevation training: running straight up and down a ski piste without any traction device. On a slope designed for skis. The grip was absolute. I was surprised this was even possible in a running shoe.

Circuito Huemul, Patagonia: four days alongside the southern Patagonian ice field. Everyone else was in mountaineering boots built for this terrain. I wore the Speedgoat. I had more grip than they did. I was faster because my shoes weighed less. This is the field test no brand publishes because it would require actually doing it.

"On ski slopes in Austria — running straight up and down. The grip was just insane. I had no idea a running shoe could do that."

How Long Does the Speedgoat Last on Real Mileage?

Two Speedgoat 6 pairs worn through. The first pair: four months across South America — Argentina, the Atacama, multiple races. The second: more of the same. When a pair is done, I replace it with the same model. This is not loyalty — it's the conclusion of testing alternatives.

In four months of travel through South America, I brought exactly two Hoka shoes: Challenger 8 and Speedgoat 6. No backup. No third option. They covered everything from city runs in Buenos Aires to ultra races to four-day Patagonian expeditions.

"I traveled four months across Argentina with only a Challenger 8 and a Speedgoat 6. No other running shoes. They covered everything."

The Beach Story: The Speedgoat 7 Has Hearts on the Sole

Running on the beach in Altafulla, Spain. I looked at the footprints in the sand and realized: the Speedgoat 7 tread pattern is made of tiny hearts. Dozens of them per step. I have a video of this — a stab in the sand with hundreds of heart-shaped prints left behind.

This is what the grip profile looks like up close. It's also the most unexpected detail from 3,258km of testing.

Is Hoka Worth the Price for Long-Distance Trail Running?

I don't know why anyone would pay more than a Hoka for trail running. For straight ultra endurance with technical grip, it covers everything. I've seen alternatives. None of them survived the same combination of races, expeditions, and daily training mileage.

The running data since all-time: 666 runs, 6,710km, 100,456m elevation — that's Everest 11.3 times on foot. Hoka has been the shoe for most of the serious mileage since 2025. The comparison group is large enough to mean something.

Verdict — After 3 UTMB Races

Three UTMB-level races. Two pairs worn through. Four months across South America with no backup shoe. An expedition on the Patagonian ice field where the Speedgoat outperformed mountaineering boots.

The Hoka Speedgoat is the answer to "best trail shoe for ultra running." Not because it's popular — because 90,993m of elevation and three UTMB races confirmed it. No brand publishes a test like this because it requires actually doing the races, not just reviewing the spec sheet.
